Starring role for The Garage at Norwich Castle

Despite the continuing challenges facing the creative arts, The Garage Trust is going big with its vision for the future – literally.

The Norwich-based performing arts venue has teamed with Norwich Bid to project films featuring its students onto the side of Norwich Castle. It’ll be the first organisation to do so this year. 

The Garage is excited to be welcoming people to the venue for their first term back since the start of the pandemic in September.

Adam Taylor, the Executive Director of The Garage Trust, said: “A big vision deserves a big canvas – and they don’t come much bigger locally than Norwich Castle. 

“We champion people’s access to the arts, providing bursaries and scholarships for our participants and students and going above and beyond when it comes to our Covid-19 precautions. But those looking to pursue a career in the creative industries are feeling besieged more than ever. The impact of this government’s funding to the cultural sector and cuts to creative subjects in higher education. Now there are murmurings of it reducing the level of students taking creative courses because a career in the arts may make it unlikely that they’ll be able to repay grant loans. 

“How can setting people up to contribute to an industry worth £111 billion to the UK economy be seen as a negative return? The successful progression from student to maker shown in these short films shows how important that talent pipeline is. Norwich Castle has stood the test of time. Having them shown there mirrors the creative industries’ similar fortitude. We’re beyond grateful to Norwich BID for the opportunity.” 

The Turn Your Dreams Into Reality films focus on The Garage’s dance, movement, music and drama classes and courses. Some of the featured performers have shared stories about their life in the arts on The Garage’s website – thegarage.org.uk

The films will be projected onto the Castle Meadow side of the historic landmark from dusk-midnight, from 1-7 November. You’ll be able to see them from points in Norwich like Norwich City Hall, The Forum and Norwich Market.
