Jo’s Cakes: Made With Love

Like so many great ideas, it all started at the kitchen table, though in this case it could hardly have started anywhere else!

Jo’s Cakes was established by Jo Haddock in her home kitchen in 2014. The business has grown quickly and she first moved to a a unit at Kersey Mill and now to a bigger unit at Hadleigh Road Industrial Estate.

It was her passion for cake and her desire to share that passion with others which led to Jo creating the business.

“I love to bake but I also wanted to be able to spend more time with my children. I have managed to achieve both; my passion has become a profitable family business. My husband is incredibly supportive and helps with the banking and deliveries. My sister is also very involved, but I wouldn’t be without my fab member of staff Claire Matthews. We work hard but we have fun doing it and Claire and I drive each other when we’re juggling deadlines. We always get there in the end.”

Jo has always had a passion for baking. While novelty cakes, which have to be seen to be believed, and large wedding cakes keep Jo and her staff busy all year round, she still produces classic bakery style cakes but with a modern twist, from loaded brownies to cookies, cakes and cheesecakes, and has a great afternoon tea range.

The fine detail and quality of the finish on every cake suggests that Jo settles for nothing less than perfection.

I’m very fussy about things being perfect and this I think shows in the end result, making us stand out from the rest. We also like to put a unique twist on things by taking the traditional bake styles to a new modern style.”

Jo loves nothing more than being able to create unique and one-of creations!

“I love meeting new customers and helping them to realise their vision. That moment when they see the finished product is a joy.”

As a self-taught baker herself, Jo has found it very rewarding to train Claire, passing on what she has learned over the years and seeing her grow to become a real assess to business.

Obviously, the pandemic has impacted the special occasion and big event aspect of the business, especially with the cancellation of weddings bookings, but the bakery has flourished and has been doing weekly deliveries to people who can’t get out as much. Jo and Claire have also had lots of fun making and donating rainbow cupcakes to different areas of the NHS and the local police station.

“To still bring smiles to the faces of people with cake has been very rewarding,” says Jo.

The new unit at Hadleigh Road Industrial Estate gives Jo plenty of space to grow the business and she hopes to soon take on more staff. She also hopes to get back out with wedding and party hire items, and the mobile pop-up ice cream parlor and other hire items which she can’t wait to start using again.

On a seemingly endless lists of ambitious projects, Jo is even considering postal cakes and bakes. Now isn’t that an exciting prospect! We’re behind you all the way Jo and if you ever need taste testers you know who to call.
